For a particle executing S.H.M, potential energy function is given by, V = 1/2kx^2 where k=0.5 N/m is the spring constant of the oscillator. If the total energy of the particle is 1 J, show that the particle turns back when x = 2 m from its mean position.

Given, the potential energy function, V =1/2 kx^2
Where, k = 0.5 N/m and V = 1 J
Substituting the values of k and V on the function, we get
1 J = ½*0.5*x^2 or, x^2 = 1*2*2 = 4
Or, x = 2 and -2.
